Since 1990 / Born and Work in Belo Horizonte – Brazil

By the end of the year 1990, O Grivo performed its first concert in Belo

Horizonte, beginning its trajectory of research in the field of “New Music”.

Since then, O Grivo has been attempting to explore and expand the acoustic

landscape, to discover new ways of organizing improvisations towards the

development of the group’s own musical language. Because of their constant

search for “new” sounds and different possibilities of orchestration and

arrangement, O Grivo works with the research of acoustic and electronic

sources; with the design, development and construction of sound machines

and sound mechanisms; and with unconventional uses of traditional musical

instruments. This research has led the group to use and manipulate a variety

of objects and materials in such a way that the importance of visual

information and its organization has taken an increasingly greater role in the

group’s performances. A greater care and attention to visual presentation in

performance is also a result of the fact that the group has been keen to join

and participate in a continuous dialogue with other art forms, such as

movies, video, drama, and dance. In O Grivo’s installations/concerts, the

borderline and intersection between sound and vision is the place where an

experience of certain notions – such as “texture”, “spatial organization”,

“overlapping”, “perspective”, “density”, “velocity”, “repetition”,

“fragmentation” – is built. The core idea governing O Grivo’s work is the

discussion of the relations between sound and space, and this is done

through an invitation to a state of active engagement with a more

contemplative and receptive listening activity – one motivated by an attitude

of openness and curiosity.
